First In Line- My Entrepreneurship Story

Assignment-3A

Growing up and living my entire life in South Florida means everything to my entrepreneurship story. Throughout my life my favorite thing to do no matter the location, the weather, or the people, was to fish. Fishing has become a big part of my life as it has helped me get to where I am today. The person who I have to thank for showing me the ropes and constantly forcing me to fish with him is my brother. Over the years from just being on the water I have learned a ton about boat manufacturing, management, fish sales, and the skills needed for deep sea fishing. In November of 2014 my brother formed First In Line Enterprises Inc.
First In Line, also known as FIL, is a privately held S corporation that entails commercial fish wholesales, boat management, maintenance, and charter fishing trips. As this company was started up, I made sure I got involved right away by helping design business cards and prepping our commercial fishing gear. Just watching this business form helped me understand the normal processes and struggles entrepreneurs go through when organizing, managing and watching business decisions being made. FIL is still very active today and whenever I am back home, I find myself mating on fishing trips whether they are for charter or commercial purposes.

The main reason I enrolled in ENT3003 is to take a business class that wasn’t just focused on logistics of economics. I wanted a wider view on how people start these small startups out of nowhere and how they grow them to become these world-renowned businesses. I also would like to learn the secrets of being a successful entrepreneur. So far I have learned more than I imagined I would in the first two weeks of this class and am excited for the rest of the semester.

Below is a picture of a 450 pound swordfish we caught on one of our recent trips last December.

  1. Hey Christopher!

Growing up in South Florida, I can agree that fishing is a popular activity. Although I have never been fond of fishing, I can say with confidence that 2/3 of my friends fell in love with the activity. I really admire how you thank your brother and the experiences you had for “showing you the ropes.” I think you did a great job describing what FIL is, and I am happy that it includes your passion.

  2. Hi!
I'm from Seattle, and fishing is definitely less popular up there than it is here. I've actually never been fishing before.... but I've always wanted to! I think it's really cool that after being on the water and fishing for so long you've learned about the technical and business side of things, too. The whole story behind First In Line and your involvement with the business is great, and it's even better that you are genuinely interested in it.

  3. Hey Christopher,
Fishing was one of my favorite experiences growing up. However, I grew up in the MidWest where everyone fished on lakes or rivers there was no market for charter fishing. Starting up your own company is a long process and I am glad to hear that it is still possible for younger people to play a role in the economy.
