Assignment 2A- Bug List, Zislin

Christopher Zislin

Assignment 2A- Bug List

1.     Motorcycles passing in between cars on major highways while in traffic
WHY: Motorcyclists do this as a way to get to their destination quicker and may also feel that they can get through whatever they want due to the small size of the vehicle.

2.   Classes that are entirely based on exam grades
WHY: Professors may not put in the extra effort to add in small assignments into the course and only have around 3-5 grades for the entire semester.

3.    Polluting the ocean with cardboard and using the excuse “It’s biodegradable”
WHY: Using the ocean as a trash can may result in less of a clean-up later, and although it will eventually decompose it still puts other marine life at risk.

4.     Waiters/waitresses saying your food is almost ready when it’s not
WHY: Food may be taking longer than expected and using this excuse keeps the customers still satisfied and not as anxious.

5.    Bags of chips being filled up halfway.
WHY: The more bags produced means more money in the producers pocket and they get away with this by filling 50% of the bag up with air.

6.    People having a private/one on one conversation in group chats
WHY: Secretly wanting everyone else in the group to see what you are telling one other person hoping that someone else joins in but ends up being disregarded.

7.    People who post 5-minute-long videos of concerts on Snapchat
WHY: Feeling that people who did not go to the event still wants to see and hear every song played at the concert becoming very irritating.

8.    Not using a turn signal when turning or switching lanes
WHY: Thinking it is okay if you speed up or slow down can turn into a bad habit causing many accidents.

9.     A bottle of water costing a MINIMUM of 5 dollars at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
WHY: UF realizes that those September home games get brutally hot making students think it is okay to pay any price for a bottle of water.

10.  Roommates who don’t take their laundry out of the washer or dryer when the cycles are finished
WHY: Simply forgetting about your laundry because those most likely are not your only clothes as well as a lack of communication to each other.

11.  The lack of visitor parking at the Retreat apartment complex in Gainesville.
WHY: The excess of assigned shaded spots that many residents do not use because it is not the closest spot to your front door. These shaded spots are also another way for the complex to make an additional $15 a month.

12.  When people have headphones in but are not listening to anything
WHY: It may be that they are trying to avoid conversation or that they were previously listening to their headphones but did not take them off afterwards.

13.  Hearing every bit of outside noise at my apartment complex when all windows and doors are shut.
WHY: The Retreat may have built the complex faster but made the walls thinner than they should be. This is frustrating especially when taking an online exam.

14.  People with headphones in singing out loud to themselves at the Retreat gym.
WHY: Playing your music too loud to the point where you can't hear yourself sing might raise your voice.

15.  People who leave their shopping cart in an empty parking space at the grocery store
WHY: The truth of the matter is that this is caused by someone being too lazy to bring the cart back to the front of the store or the designated cart area in the parking lot.

16.  The car in front of you takes forever to order while going through a fast food restaurant drive thru.
WHY: It is either caused by the employee not being ready to take the order or the customer not having an idea of what they want as they enter the drive thru.

17.  Original iPhone factory charging cables constantly breaking
WHY: Due to the high demand for apple products these cables are produced rather quickly and in such large capacity that put the extra effort in to make them sturdy does not exist.

18.  The Florida Gators mobile ticketing app crashes or does not show my ticket as I am walking up to the scanner
WHY: UF thinks that our ticketing system needed to be updated by making everything on a single app rather than printed tickets.

19.  People who throw used paper towels on the counter of the sink in a public bathroom
WHY: Trash cans may already be full or the fact that many people do not care where they throw their garbage because it is not their job to clean it up.

20.  Getting bombarded with advertisements about something I have searched or have talked about.
WHY: Certain legal obligations allow our search history to be used as a re-marketing tool for things we search or say out loud.

REFLECTION:
At first when I attempted this assignment it was easy to name around five to ten “bugs.” However, after I was about half way finished, I hit a road block and couldn’t think of any more off the top of my head. In order to find ten more bugs, I realized I needed to go about my daily routine and just notice things that annoyed me along the way. After a few days I had the rest of the list. Overall, this assignment was not very difficult as long as you do not try to do it in one sitting. I found this assignment to be very intriguing and eye opening to simple things that bug me on a daily basis.

  1. Hey Christopher,

I really enjoyed reading your bug list, and it was very detailed and relatable. My favorites from the list were the "people who post 5-minute-long videos of concerts on Snapchat" and the "People having a private/one on one conversation in group chats." I never thought about that before! I agree with your reflection on this assignment, and I also realized that it was more challenging trying to figure it out in one sitting. Great job on this assignment overall!

  2. Hi Christopher, great job creating your bug list. I found myself relating to many of your bugs, such as: half-filled bags of chips, limited parking space, and the inflated price of water bottles at the stadium. I think these are all common problems, and perhaps finding these unmet needs could lead to developing a solution. My time completing this assignment also led me to have my eyes opened and really allowed me to reflect on the things that bug me. Great job.

  3. Hey, Christopher! I really love the organization of your bug list, and it appears to be very thorough. I particularly enjoy your point about not using turn signals when changing lanes or turning because it is one of my close friends absolute pet peeve. It drives her insane, but as for me, I could care less. However, I truly relate to your point about waiters when they say your food is ready but it is not. I am such a terrible person when I am hungry, and I swear that saying that is the worst. Thanks for making me feel like I'm not the only one.
